Spray Safety and Tank Compatibility: What Every Farmer Should Know

Mixing multiple products in a single tank saves time and fuel, but it also introduces risk. Understanding spray safety and tank compatibility protects your equipment, your crops, and your investment.

THE RISKS OF INCOMPATIBILITY

Incompatible products can form solids, gels, or a cottage cheese consistency that clogs nozzles and filters. Chemical incompatibility can also reduce effectiveness or damage crops without showing any visible change in the tank.

FOLLOW THE LABEL

Product labels provide specific instructions on mixing order, carrier types, and known incompatibilities. If the label prohibits a mix, do not attempt it.

MASTER THE MIXING ORDER

When the label does not specify a mixing order, use the WALES method: wettable powders first, then agitate, then liquids and flowables, emulsifiable concentrates, and surfactants last. Always fill the tank to at least half capacity with carrier before adding products.

THE JAR TEST

Before committing to a full tank mix, perform a jar test. Add the carrier and products in the correct order to a clear jar, shake, and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Look for clumping, separation, or color changes. If the mix remains stable, it is likely safe for your sprayer.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY

Inspect hoses, nozzles, and seals regularly. Triple-rinse the tank and lines after every use to prevent cross-contamination. Always wear the required personal protective equipment specified on the product labels.

Spray safety and tank compatibility are the foundation of a successful application season. Taking time to test your mixes and maintain your equipment protects your operation and your bottom line.
